Inspiration for the name 51s came from the nearby “Area 51,” a super-secret U.S. government base that has been rife with UFO sightings over the years. The baseball season runs from April through September and the Las Vegas 51s compete against such teams as the Portland Beavers, Albuquerque Isotopes, Fresno Grizzlies, Iowa Cubs, Salt Lake Bees, Nashville Sounds and Colorado Springs Skysox, among others.
