Spanish explorers under the leadership of Antonio Armijo name the area Las Vegas (Spanish for "the meadows").

1855

Mormon missionaries led by William Bringhurst build an adobe fort along Las Vegas Creek.

1906

The Golden Gate Hotel first opens its doors.

1909

The State of Nevada passes a law that bans gambling.

1911

Las Vegas is incorporated as a city.

1925


Fremont Street becomes the first paved street in Las Vegas.

1931

Nevada becomes the first state in the United States to legalize casinos statewide.

1935
Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicates the Boulder Dam.

1940

Wee Kirk O' the Heather
opens (and today is the oldest continually operating wedding chapel in Las Vegas).

1941

The Hotel El Rancho Vegas opens as the first full-scale casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

1944

Liberace - "Mr. Showmanship" - makes his Las Vegas debut at the Last Frontier Hotel.

1946


Legendary gangster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel opens the Flamingo Hotel.

1955

The Nevada Gaming Board is established.

1959

The Folies Bergere at the Tropicana opens (and today is the longest-running show in Las Vegas).

The Las Vegas Convention Center opens its doors.

1960

The Rat Pack - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford - perform at The Sands Hotel for the first time.

1964

Nevada Electronic introduces the first electronic slot machine.

1967


Reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes purchases the Desert Inn.

Elvis and Pricilla Presley get married at the Aladdin Hotel's wedding chapel.

2003

Nongaming revnue surpasses gaming revenue in Clark County.

2004

The Las Vegas Monorail, which runs along the Las Vegas Strip, opens to the public.

2005

Las Vegas celebrates its centennial with a year full of special events and festivities.

Nevada gaming revenue tops $11.6 billion.

2006


Las Vegas hosts a record 38.9 million visitors and gambling revenue amounts to approximately $6.6 billion.

Approximately 46 million passengers pass through McCarran International Airport annually , making it the sixth busiest airport in North America.

Nevada celebrates 75 years of gaming.

2009

The Folies Bergere show closes after a 49-year run on the Las Vegas Strip.
